On 22 November, 3pm, Prof. Insa Neuweiler from the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Physics in Civil Engineering will give a presentation about "(Ensemble) Kalman Filters and their application to parameter estimation and data assimilation".

The Ensemble Kalman Filter is a popular data assimilation method. It is used for a broad field of prediction models, but also for inverse modeling. The general approach as well as the approach for related methods, such as Ensemble Kalman Smoother or iterative filters, will be outlined. The Ensemble Kalman Filter has been used for data assimilation in hydrology for a long time. For data assimilation with subsurface flow models, one challenge is that observations are usually rare and often local, while the flow parameters are heterogeneously distributed and unknown. The presentation will discuss approaches to deal with these challenges and filter strategies under these conditions.
